Initial Information for Junior Researchers Seeking PhD Supervision

1. Januar 2021

If you are interested in working with me on your doctoral project in political science, please consider the following:

  • Supervision is possible within or outside the framework of Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS). However, I generally prefer BIGSAS members. The graduate school does not offer individual scholarships, however, it supports you with regard to the working environment and selected research activities. Please inform yourself at the BIGSAS website.
  • In your query, please specify from which institute(s) and in which discipline(s) you have received your academic degree(s). At least one of your degrees should be in political science as the academic program in Bayreuth will not provide you with the opportunity to catch up on basic political science approaches and methods. Please also consider that BIGSAS regulations require a MA degree that was graded ‘good’ or better in the German system (or equivalent on foreign grading scales).
  • Queries should be accompanied by a one-page abstract of your research project. Comprehensive project proposals are additionally welcome. Your topic should relate to one of my major research interests: political parties and elections, the role of the judiciary in politics, or the origin of democratic institutions. The abstract should include information on your research question, the academic debate(s) that you plan to rely on/speak to, as well as your first methodological ideas.

In order to be able to provide fair and conducive supervision, I limit the number of PhD stu-dents in my sphere of responsibility. This also means that a negative answer to your query does not imply a general statement on the quality of your proposal or research interest.
